March 18th, 2015 - Austin, Texas The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority and Metropia have formed a public-private sector collaboration with the Austin Transportation Department to help Austinites and out-of-towners get around during South by Southwest (SXSW). With more than 100 people moving to the Austin region every day, traffic is already congested. During big events like SXSW it can be even worse. Metropia – an innovative traffic app that works directly with local governments to reduce congestion – can help.
The Austin Transportation Department is working with Metropia during SXSW to disseminate real-time information on traffic conditions to the general public via Twitter. Locals and visitors can track #SXSWtraffic and #ATXtraffic to get alerts on road closures and detours caused by unexpected incidents. Some suggested accounts to follow include @MetropiaATX and @AustinTexasGov. The Metropia app is also available for download on the App Store and Google Play, directing users to the fastest routes around areas congested by SXSW traffic.
Metropia has a special operation team at the Austin Transportation Department’s traffic management center monitoring congestion and unexpected incidents using crowd-sourced and other available information. Quickly communicating those incidents to the community will help drivers avoid congested areas. Metropia users will be automatically routed around those incidents and will receive push notifications about unexpected road closures and emergencies.
